There are things you need to know about Low Blood Pressure. Thus, I would be giving a write up on LOW BLOOD PRESSURE in this weekly health article series 1.0


WHAT IS LOW BLOOD PRESSURE?

Low blood pressure, or hypotension, is a medical condition characterized by a systolic blood pressure (SBP) less than or equal to 90 mmHg or a diastolic blood pressure (DBP) less than or equal to 60 mmHg.


Low blood pressure range result can be seen as or below the range of

90 mmHg/60 mmHg on the sphygmomanometer or blood pressure machine. On this machine, the SBP and DBP is what determines the blood pressure results after it's being used.


  • Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP): The top number, measuring the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats.

  • Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP): The bottom number, measuring the pressure in the arteries between beats.


Types of Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension)


The common types of low blood pressure are as follows;


1. Acute Hypotension: Sudden and severe drop in blood pressure, often due to blood loss, dehydration, or medication.

2. Chronic Hypotension: Long-term low blood pressure, often asymptomatic.

3. Orthostatic Hypotension: Drop in blood pressure upon standing, causing dizziness or fainting.

4. Postprandial Hypotension: Drop in blood pressure after eating, common in older adults.


Some risk Factors/cause of Low Blood Pressure are as follows;


1. Dehydration or fluid loss

2. Blood loss or internal bleeding

3. Certain medications (e.g., diuretics, beta-blockers)

4. Heart conditions (e.g., heart failure, arrhythmias)

5. Endocrine disorders (e.g., adrenal insufficiency, diabetes)

6. Nutritional deficiencies (e.g., vitamin B12, iron)

7. Age (older adults)

8. Pregnancy


Some symptoms of Low Blood Pressure are as follows;


1. Dizziness or lightheadedness

2. Fainting or syncope

3. Nausea and vomiting

4. Fatigue or weakness

5. Headaches

6. Confusion or disorientation


Complications when there's Low Blood Pressure, can be any or all of the following;


1. Reduced blood flow to vital organs

2. Increased risk of falls and injuries

3. Decreased cognitive function

4. Increased risk of cardiovascular diseases


Prevention of Low Blood Pressure is possible,if you do the following;


1. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water

2. Eat a balanced diet with adequate salt and nutrients

3. Avoid standing for long periods

4. Exercise regularly, but avoid overexertion

5. Manage stress

6. Monitor blood pressure regularly


Control Measures For Low Blood Pressure are as follows;


1. Increase fluid and electrolyte intake

2. Wear compression stockings

3. Elevate legs when sitting or lying down

4. Avoid sudden changes in position

5. Take medication as prescribed (if applicable)

6. Consider vitamin supplements (if deficient)
